How ARE you doing?

How are you doing? No really … how ARE you doing?

Our disappointment regarding cancelling our plans to serve you and God’s church have paled in significance in these most recent days as we absorb the immensity of global events. Clearly God has much bigger plans for His church in these days than our little conference. At the same time, we want you to know, we are sorry not to be sharing fellowship with you this week. There really is deep disappointment in this loss and it is good for us to acknowledge it.

When we made the decision to cancel, we were exercising ‘choice’ … or so we thought. Today we know that there was no choice in it at all. With world leaders working to discern how to protect their people and their economies, it has become necessary that decisions like the one we made, be made for us. With those overwhelming measures of leadership comes an increasing awareness of the gravity of the situation. So … how ARE you really doing?

Are you finding ways to keep your heart rooted in the One who sees it all and holds it all in the palm of His hand? There is something utterly breathtaking about recognizing that God can use something microscopic – unseen to the naked eye – to capture the attention of virtually every human on the planet. As God’s children, we will serve Him best if we can push that microscopic organism aside in order to see our good Father with greater clarity. Rather than looking to God through the lens of coronavirus, we want to look at the coronavirus through the lens of God. What is He doing in His world? The worst thing we could do at this time is miss the answer to that question.

Will you pray with us that God’s people – His church scattered – will lift their hearts and eyes to heaven and let Him guide us in responding to a global pandemic? There are no books for this, except The Book and we’ve never searched its pages for THIS. It’s time to be searching. We are asking the Lord to guide us all as we seek to proclaim and display His great glory to a world that has been knocked completely off all artificial foundations. Oh that the lost would see His glory in His church and long for the one sure foundation that cannot be shaken.

Though we can’t share time together this week, you are on our hearts. We are praying for you in these ways:

  • That your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. (Phil 1:9-10)
  • That you will experience the reality of being sheltered as under God’s pinions and choose to find refuge under His wings; that you will know beyond the shadow of a doubt His faithfulness as your refuge and buckler (shield/protection).
  • That you will be receiving from God abiding comfort in all your afflictions so that you may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort that you have received from Him.

If there are other ways we could be praying for you at this time, please let us know. It would be our privilege to share in God’s ministry to you in these days.

Some of you made the sacrificial choice to relinquish your registration fee to support the ongoing ministry of CBCC. We are deeply humbled and grateful for your gift. Will you pray for wisdom for us to use it in new and meaningful ways, while the normal ways we serve the Canadian church are unavailable to us.

With heartfelt gratitude for you,
Betty-Anne Van Rees on behalf of the CBCC board

2020 Conference Breakout Sessions

Breakout sessions are a great way for you to explore together in a smaller group with the opportunity to interact and ask questions. In 2020 we have six different breakout sessions. The same six breakout sessions run twice during the conference so you have an opportunity to attend your top two choices.

Counselling from the Scriptures
Jason Kovacs
In this breakout, we will look at how to use Romans 6-8 to help counselees better understand sanctification and their relationship with Christ, self, sin, and their future.

Growing In What You Already Are
Colossians 1 & 2
Matt King
In this session, we will illustrate how to equip a counselee to walk in the victory that Christ has already won and rest in the identity they have already inherited.

Satisfying Our Thirst From Waters Bought Without Money
Isaiah 55:1-3a
Betty-Anne Van Rees
In this session we will consider the wildernesses that falsely offer what they cannot give and come to us at great personal cost, along side the fountain of living water that is offered to us at no personal cost and delivers abundantly.

Fighting for Joy Through Spiritual Disciplines
Nathan Penny
We all want to be filled with joy in God, and amazingly, that’s what God wants for us as well! So how do we chase down more joy? The path may be surprising… spiritual disciplines!

Rightly Handling the Word of Truth
Dr. Stephen Yuille
Biblical counsellors are called to speak the truth of God’s Word into the lives of God’s people. The purpose of this session is to consider how we can do this accurately, faithfully, and relevantly.

The Big Story of The Bible
Rev. David Robinson
What is the big story God tells in Scripture and how does that help us care for those who bring their small, broken and scattered stories into the coffee shop or the counselling room?

Mourning with Hope

Loss, brokenness, grief, death … despite the fact that every human life must face them, we live in a world that avoids these things at all costs. As a result we are often ill equipped to deal with these things in our own lives, and to minister to others going through them.

In our upcoming conference, Lee Lewis will address the topic of mourning with hope from the Psalms that each of us may be better equipped to weep with those who weep and to mourn with those who mourn.

When sin entered the world in Genesis 3 God’s created order was to the furthest degree fractured. As a result humans regularly encounter the effects of this brokenness. The believer in Christ has the unique ability to enter into the broken reality of sin, death, and loss, but with a heart grounded in hope. The Psalms like no other book of the Bible teach God’s people how to right express and respond to sorrow and brokenness, but in an honest, humble, and reverent need of the Father.

Quieting our souls in a world that lives loud

Without intentionality days or even weeks can go by without a quiet moment for reflection. If we are honest, it isn’t just that we ARE busy, it is that we WANT to be busy.

At our upcoming conference, Lee Lewis will speak on the art of quieting our souls from Psalm 131.

So often our souls can easily be filled with chaos and noise. Much of this comes from the fact that we live in a fallen world that is filled with toils, cares, and anxieties. This reality is also true because our hearts are easily tempted to look to things too great for us to solve, handle, or deal with. Psalm 131 uses these realities to show how the humble heart can navigate the cares and anxieties of the world by resting in the caring provision and relationship with the Father.

Don’t Waste your Weakness

Our culture abhors weakness. Students of the Bible understand that weakness should not be thought of as the world around us thinks of it, but it is hard to think about weakness correctly amongst the flood of cultural messages around us.

In our upcoming conference, Lee Lewis will focus on the opportunity that weakness creates in our lives from Psalm 121.

Many problems arise in the soul of a person if they choose to live a self-reliant, independent life. In short this is pride. This is the exact opposite of how God created us to be in Genesis 1 and 2. As trouble or trials comes into a person’s life, one of the first things revealed is incredible weakness and need. Psalm 121 speaks to this reality but in a way where the revealed need and weakness is rightly oriented towards God.

Identity is Important

Identity is important. Consider just some of the things that God’s Word says that are true of you because you are ‘in Christ’.

In Christ, you are …

  • Forgiven
  • Righteous
  • A Treasured Possession
  • A Saint
  • An Adopted Heir
  • A Friend of God
  • Redeemed
  • A Child of God

At our upcoming conference, Lee Lewis will dwell upon this topic of identity from Psalm 8.

Much of what counseling deals with is wading into the murky variances of how people identify or see themselves. Biblical counseling has a great advantage when it comes to understanding identity. Psalm 8 gives a clear picture of how God created humans and what that means in light of creation, sin in the world, and God’s redemptive plan through Christ.
